Euro2016: ‘What on earth is Gary Neville doing?’ - Shearer slams former Man Utd star

Alan Shearer was damning in his analysis of England's embarrassing defeat to Iceland at Euro2016.

The Three Lions lost 2-1 to the European minnows in the Round of 16 in Nice on Monday night, conceding a sixth-minute equaliser to a long throw-in, after Wayne Rooney had converted form the penalty spot just moments earlier.

Shearer could not believe that the coaching staff had not prepared the players to deal with Aron Gunnarsson's lofty throw-ins and criticised assistant coach Gary Neville for failing to have a plan in place to prevent such a goal from occurring.

"What on earth is Gary Neville doing? He was one of the best defenders in the world, he will know Iceland's strength at set-pieces so surely he has been working on defending them all week," the former Three Lions striker told the BBC.

"So why is Wayne Rooney, who is not deemed a good enough header of the ball to be in the box when we are attacking corners, being asked to mark one of Iceland's best headers of the ball?

"So it's not just the manager, it's the coaching staff as well."

The levelling goal came when Gunnarsson threw the ball into the box for Kari Arnason to supply a glancing header to the back post for fellow central defender Ragnar Sigurdsson to volley home from close range.

Kolbeinn Sigthorsson then fired beyond Joe Hart on 18 minutes to give Iceland a famous victory, allowing them to progress to the quarter-finals where they will meet hosts France in Paris on Sunday.
