Euro2016: Man Utd skipper Rooney impresses Shearer with new England role

Former England star Alan Shearer was pleased with the display of Three Lions captain Wayne Rooney in Saturday's opening Euro2016 fixture.

The Manchester United star impressed in a three-man midfield role alongside Eric Dier and Dele Alli and Shearer feels it was an accomplished performance from the veteran.

"He played the new position very well and combined well with Eric Dier and Dele Alli too," Shearer told the BBC.

"Dier sat in but Rooney and Alli had to decide when to stay and go forward - and they got it right."

England are likely to go with the same midfield combination when they take on Wales in Lens on Thursday in their second Group B outing.
