Euro2016: Italy turn on the style to oust reigning champions Spain

Italy put in the complete performance to defeat arch rivals Spain 2-0 and send the reigning holders out of Euro 2016.

Conte's side started encouragingly with Eder getting a shot in inside the box which the Spanish defence snuffed out.

Then David De Gea produced an excellent low fingertip save to stop Grazziano Pelle's header from going in.

Spain's first half-chance fell to Cesc Fabregas who had an effort blocked.

But their centre back Sergio Ramos nearly gave Italy the lead as his miscued clearance just went over the bar.

And fellow defender Gorgio Cheillini gave the Italians a deserved 33rd minute breakthrough , pouncing onto a save from David De Gea to force the ball into the net.

Giaccherini nearly topped off a perfect first half for the men in blue but his fierce drive was met with an acrobatic save from De Gea.

Spain came out in the second with more vigour as Álvaro Morata had a free header saved by veteran Goalkeeper Buffon.

However striker Eder should have made it 2-0 to the Azzurri but his close-range strike was blocked by De Gea once again.

But Graziano Pelle finished the tie off late on with a volley as the 2012 winners were sent crashing out of the competition.

Round of 16

Italy: 2 (Chiellini 33, Pelle 90)
