Dutch pundit Verweij convinced Ajax will try for Spurs midfielder Bergwijn

Dutch pundit Mike Verweij expects Ajax to step up their interest in Tottenham midfielder Steven Bergwijn.

The former PSV Eindhoven ace is being linked with their great Eredivisie rivals this summer.

And with Ajax being beaten by Rennes to FC Nordsjaelland winger Kamaldeen Sulemana, Verweij says they're now set to turn to Bergwijn as an alternative.

“Do I want to say something to the listeners? Well, this is interesting," Verweij told De Telegraaf.

“There was a consultation today, because Ajax has drawn up a shadow list in case Sulemana would not take place. I'm not sure what names are on it. But it is very logical that Steven Bergwijn will come back into the picture."

"The disadvantage for Ajax around Steven Bergwijn is that he has been running like a charm under the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur since preseason," Verweij continues. "Spurs are not willing to let him go. But he can play on the left, on the right as well as a 'number ten'. You can really go in all directions with him."
