Filip Djuricic felt Southampton were extremely unlucky not to beat Liverpool on Sunday.
The Saints were beaten 2-0 by the Reds at St Mary's Stadium but the performance was good enough for at least a draw with loan signing Djuricic suggesting perhaps Ronald Koeman's men should have tasted victory.
Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling scored either side of the break for the visitors but Serbian winger Djuricic, who is on loan from Benfica, felt it could have been a different story if his side had some luck.
"We were the better team," he told Southampton's official YouTube channel. "In the end we lost a very important three points for us.
"But still, the team played very well first half and that gives us the hope that we can reach our goal by the end of the season.
"We were the better team and had the ball more of the time. In football at the end the result counts. We should now turn to our next game against West Brom.
"They played with five behind and defended very well. We did everything we could but the result wasn't on our side. If one of the decisions came in, we could be looking at a totally different game.
"They had more luck and that decided the game."
The defeat saw the Saints relinquish third spot on the Premier League table to Arsenal while Liverpool moved to within one point of the south coast club who have lost two of their past four league fixtures.
