Derby owner Morris denies Rooney replacing Cocu

Derby County owner Mel Morris has denied media reports that Wayne Rooney is in line to become the team's manager.

There was speculation that boss Phillip Cocu is on the way out if the team loses one or two of its upcoming Championship games.

Derby have started the season very poorly, and Cocu is under serious pressure.

But after giving an interview on talkSPORT, Morris denied the speculation.

He said: "Ha! I read the article last night and it's like a lot of these things on transfers and issues like this; I wish sometimes people would tell me what is happening because I had absolutely no idea that was going down.

"I found it completely and totally ridiculous that that was in there, and I sent the article to someone else last night and said, 'there is fake news and then there is this!'

"If you say to me he [Cocu] is under pressure, well yes he is under pressure but he feels that pressure himself; it's not pressure that we are mounting on him.

"I've been in this situation before with poor results and obviously everyone wants good results, but we've got a good understanding of what is behind the results we've had so far; we've had lots of discussions around that and he's had lots of meetings with the team and the coaches, and he's given lots of his ability to those things.

"So we are very confident we have the right plans in place to turn things around, but obviously there are no guarantees in football."
