Crystal Palace boss Hodgson: Tonali ban a tragedy

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson says the 10-month ban for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali is a "tragedy".

The Italian Federation have announced the suspension for the former AC Milan star today for placing illegal bets.

Former Inter Milan coach Hodgson said: "I had my opinion on gambling and its influence (last week), not just on football but on the world today, and this is just another example of it.

"I was shocked by the situation with [Brentford striker] Ivan Toney and his situation when it came out. Ten months is an incredible time. To stop playing football for one year and then to come back into it, for him, it's a tragedy really, and the club too.

"That's where we are with betting at the moment."
