Hughes doesn't want Blackburn's Reid in Ireland squad

Mark Hughes has said that he will pull Steven Reid out of the Republic of Ireland squad after the midfielder was given a call up on Tuesday.

Reid has had more than his fair share of injuries over the last year but has been working his way back to fitness with games in Rovers' reserve team, he has not played first team football for over 14 months.

Even so, Don Givens has named Reid in his squad for the Euro 2008 qualifier against Wales on November 17th and Hughes is not pleased about it.

"There's no way Steven can play because he's just not ready yet," said the Rovers boss in the Lancashire Telegraph.

"The guy has been out for 14 months with two different injuries and he has yet to play a first team game for us, so there's no way he can play for his country."

"I don't want to set Steven specific targets because if he doesn't hit them, it seems like a setback," he added.

"He's making good progress and you can see that he's getting stronger with every game he plays, but he probably needs another couple of matches yet before we can start thinking about throwing him back in.

"You can't rush people back when they've been out for as long as Steven has."
