Champions League: Man City labour to draw with Shakhtar Donetsk

Manchester City qualified for the knock-out stages of the Champions League with an unconvincing 1-1 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Manchester City have four wins in five games against Shakhtar but after a low key first half which ended scoreless it seemed as if the visitors had come to terms with their opponents.

Only Kevin De Bruyne looked like breaking the deadlock either with his shooting or providing an assist as the Shakhtar defence looked comfortable restricting the home side to half chances.

Rodri did see a long range effort well saved and Nicolas Otamendi had a powerful header similarly stopped by keeper Andriy Pyatov.

But the Ukrainians had the best chance of the half on 14 minutes when a long ball was chased by Tete. City keeper Ederson raced out of goal, air-kicked the clearance leaving the Brazilian forward with a clear run on an unguarded goal.

Fortunately he hesitated in shooting allowing Fernandinho to slide back and deflect the ball for a corner. A real let off for the home team.

Certainly Shakhtar looked dangerous on the break and Alan Patrick blazed over from a good position as not for the first time the City defence looked vulnerable.

But within 11 minutes of the restart City took the lead. The Shakhtar defence failed to deal with a hard low cross from De Bruyne and as the ball broke Ilkay Gundogan was in the right place to stroke the opener from close range.

As City failed to build on this goal the visitor's took full advantage within 8 minutes. A quick break between the Brazilian duo Tete and Dodo ended with ball cut back and substitute Manor Solomon with his first touch of the ball equalised from fifteen yards.

City responded immediately but Gabriel Jesus's scuffed shot is cleared off the line by Taras Stepanenko.

Shakhtar now looked happy with the point and defended deep but City lacked the guile to break them down much to the frustration of the home crowd.
