Celtic's Champions League hopes still alive

Celtic are still a chance of qualifying for the Champions League following tonight's 1-1 draw with NK Maribor in the first leg of their qualifying play-off.

The Scottish champions were given a reprieve after Legia Warsaw were kicked out of the competition for fielding an ineligible player in the Polish club's two-legged 6-1 victory recently and are now just one game away from again qualifying for the group stage proper after the draw in Slovenia.

Young midfielder Callum McGregor gave the Hoops an early lead when he struck in the sixth minute before Damjan Bohar replied for the home side eight minutes later.

Ronny Deila's Celtic came through with a deserved draw in the end ahead of the return bout which will be played at Celtic Park in Glasgow next Tuesday.

In other Champions League qualifiers on Wednesday night, Red Bull Salzburg defeated Malmo 2-1, Aalborg drew with APOEL Nicosia 1-1, Steaua Bucharest got the better of Ludogorets Razgrad 1-0 and Slovan Bratislava drew 1-1 with BATE Borisov.
