Carragher highlights importance of Sterling's new Liverpool deal

Jamie Carragher believes it is vital for Liverpool that Raheem Sterling signs a long-term contract with the club.

The Reds are hoping to secure the talented 20-year old winger on an extended deal with his current stay at Anfield ending in the summer of 2017.

Liverpool recently confirmed that captain and club legend Steven Gerrard will be leaving in the summer to join MLS champions LA Galaxy which has prompted ex-defender Carragher to highlight the vital need to tie down Sterling just as they did with Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho this week.

"For everyone at the club, the quicker it is done and dusted the better," said Sky Sports pundit Carragher.

"He is a very young player and is one of the top players in English football.

"Like Coutinho, you need to keep these players at the club, because with losing an iconic player in Steven Gerrard at the end of the season, you have to keep the younger ones, who hopefully one day could become that icon."
