CAPITAL ONE CUP - QF: Man Utd edge out Stoke in hail-affected clash

Manchester United have progressed to the final four of the Capital One Cup after beating Stoke City 2-0 at the Britannia Stadium.

In a hail-affected meeting, the Red Devils overcame the elements to move into the semi-finals where they will meet Sunderland.

The contest endured a break in play around the half-hour mark when both sets of players left the pitch in the middle of a hail storm but about thirty minutes after the re-start, Ashley Young opened the scoring for the visitors.

The winger fired a 20-yard effort past Thomas Sorensen in the 62nd minute to give United the ascendency before Patrice Evra wrapped up the fixture with just over ten minutes remaining when he received a pass from Young before cutting back inside and curling home with his non-preferred right foot.

The victory sees David Moyes' side head into the two-legged semi with the Black Cat which kicks off at the Stadium of Light in the week commencing January 6 and concluded a fortnight later at Old Trafford.
