Liverpool endured a difficult night against Carlisle United but scraped through in the third round of the Capital One Cup.
The Reds were pushed to extra-time by the League Two outfit who drew level in the first half at 1-1 before finally succumbing in a tense penalty shootout at Anfield.
Danny Ings added to his debut goal in Sunday's draw with Norwich City by opening the scoring for Liverpool in the 23rd minute with a close range header.
However, Carlisle fought back just after the half-hour mark through Derek Asamoah who raced onto a ball from Bastien Hery before beating Adam Bogdan at his near post.
Liverpool had a remarkable 47 attempts on goal over the 120 minutes but were unable to pierce the Cumbrian defence as Keith Curle's side managed to get to penalties.
In the shootout, Bogdan became the Kop hero with a trio of saves to deny Carlisle captain Danny Grainger as well as Luke Joyce and Hery, while James Milner, Emre Can and Ings all converted to send the Premier League side through 3-2 after a shaky performance.
