Blackburn Rovers boss Gary Bowyer left Rudy Gestede out of their 1-1 draw with Wigan Athletic.
Gestede is being linked with Crystal Palace, West Bromwich Albion and Hull City.
Bowyer explained: "There's a Premier League club in discussions with the club - but the club quite rightly doesn't want to sell him on the cheap.
"If nothing is concluded over the weekend we'll have him back in work on Monday, and we'll continue to have him available for the rest of our games and scoring more goals.
"Talks have taken place over the last 24 hours and we decided to focus on this game with the players we knew would be available."
With a transfer embargo in place, Bowyer admits losing Gestede - even for a decent fee - would not be ideal.
He continued: "It would be a massive blow to lose any player in this embargo, because we don't get the money to replace them.
"It's like trying to do the job with our hands tied behind our backs a little bit, but we know the rules and we have to comply with them."
