Birmingham set to snap up Newcastle defender Edgar

Birmingham City are close to a deal for Newcastle United defender David Edgar.

The Daily Mail says Edgar looks certain to join Premier League newcomers Birmingham City after failing to secure a new contract at St James' Park.

The Canadian-born defender left the club at the end of last season without signing a new deal and looks likely to be the first victim of the current chaos on Tyneside.

Birmingham are leading the chase to sign the 22-year-old on a free transfer when he returns from his summer holidays.

Edgar, the son of former Newcastle keeper Eddie, played 13 games for the Geordies last season as a back-up defender.
