Benitez immediately focuses on league as Newcastle hammer Preston

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has immediately shifted his focus to the upcoming league trip to Preston North End after his side embarrassed them 6-0 in the EFL Cup clash on Tuesday night.

The Magpies currently sit at the top of the Championship table, but Benitez is expecting a strong response from the Lilywhites in front of their fans at Deepdale in the wake of the league cup drubbing.

When asked of Newcastle's overall chances in the EFL Cup, Benitez said: "I have to concentrate just on Preston on Saturday, wait and see what happens in the draw and after, maybe I can answer those questions.

"They will try to amend the situation, they will try to change things, we will be playing away, so it will be totally different.

"It's another competition, so we have to enjoy it. Normally I say one or two days and after, concentrate on the next game. It will be tough, for sure."

Aleksandar Mitrovic and Mohamed Diane both scored braces while Matt Ritchie and Ayoze Perez were also on the scoresheet at St James' Park as the Toon skipped into the quarter-finals.
