Belgium coach Martinez fumes: Chelsea defender Rudiger deserved red

Belgium coach Roberto Martinez is angry with Chelsea defender Toni Rudiger after his clash with Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne.

De Bruyne was forced off after an hour of City's 1-0 Champions League final defeat in Porto, following a clash with Rudiger, who was shown a yellow card for the foul.

A distraught De Bruyne was in tears as he was forced off, but stayed to watch from the bench with an ice-pack on the affected area, before being taken away by City's medical staff before the end of the game.

Specialists at hospital confirmed a double fracture, which has cast doubt on whether De Bruyne will be fit to play for Belgium in the European Championships.

Martinez said Rudiger should have been shown a straight red card for the foul which brought a premature end to De Bruyne's night.

“For me, Rudiger is very, very fortunate," said Martinez. “When you look at the replay, there's no clash of heads.

“He's properly leaving the shoulder against Kevin. He seems concussed and we will see the state of that.

“But that leaves a sour taste, because Rudiger's holding his head, it's almost that he wants to show that he's hiding something.

“For me, it was excessive force and it was reckless. And it should have been a red card.

“Kevin is not a player that goes down for no reason. You can see the pain and it's a swollen eye."
