DaMarcus Beasley has been handed the captain's armband for the USA national team ahead of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
The 31-year old is the second-most capped player behind Landon Donovan in Juergen Klinsmann's squad and has been given the task of leading the side into the North, Central American and Caribbean tournament.
The former PSV Eindhoven, Manchester City, Rangers and Hannover man has been deployed at left-back recently and Klinsmann admitted he was delighted by his attitude.
Klinsmann said of the Puebla winger: "DaMarcus is a pure giver. When we called him in back in March, he told me he would play whatever role we asked, and he has proven his point over the last several months with some tremendous performances.
"He's a great guy to have around the locker room. He always has a smile and brings a lot of positive energy. His leadership and experience will be very valuable in this tournament, and he can help connect some of the younger players to what we have been building."
The US takes on Guatemala on Friday in a pre-tournament friendly prior to their meeting with Belize in Portland in their Group C opener on July 9.
Klinsmann's side will also come up against Cuba and Costa Rica in Sandy and East Hartford respectively in the tournament which kicks off in Pasadena on Sunday with Canada taking on Martinique and Mexico facing Panama.
