Mario Balotelli has said farewell to Liverpool fans after he returned to Italy following a disappointing spell on Merseyside.

The 25-year-old striker underwent a medical at the San Siro on Tuesday but AC Milan are yet to confirm the loan deal's completion.

And Balotelli, who scored 26 goals in 46 games for the Rossoneri during his last spell at the club, is now heading back to Serie A after posting a farewell message to Liverpool fans on his official Facebook page.

"I'm grateful to Liverpool FC and Liverpool fans for the time and opportunities you gave me," he wrote.

"It's not a goodbye but rather a farewell. I'll be supporting you guys all the way in every competition... unless you face AC Milan."
