Athletic Bilbao coach Valverde: Home fans key today against Girona

Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde is seeking another three points today against Girona.

Los Leones have the chance to notch back-to-back LaLiga victories in Bilbao when they take on Girona FC at The Cathedral.

"Throughout our history Athletic have always been very strong at San Mamés and where we've had the most problems is away from home. Our home form must be the base of all our work," Valverde said at a pre-match press conference on Saturday.

"We should get good numbers at home and teams who come here must know they're going to have a tough time. It's good that they fear us, but that's something we have to establish from the first minute by going for the game and not giving chances away."

Athletic fell to a 2-1 defeat against Girona at Montilivi in November and the gaffer is keen to see that his Lions have learnt from that performance.

He continued: "Objectively speaking, we played very badly. I have that match ingrained in my memory. It showed me things about the team that you also learn from. We're looking forward to facing them again and doing better."

The Catalans are the third-highest scoring team in LaLiga after only FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. What's more their most recent fixture saw them beat UD Almería 6-2.

"Their numbers went up last week because it's unusual to score six in a league that's so evenly matched. They have a lot of attacking footballers and they do well going forward," he continued.

"They try to play good football but at the same time they struggle to keep clean sheets. That's the truth and there's always an explanation for that. I think they're having a good season and growing as the season progresses."

The Zurigorri go up against Osasuna in the first-leg of their Copa semi-final clash on Wednesday, but Valverde promised they're fully focused on the match at hand.

He added: "We have the same amount of rest days as Osasuna. In LaLiga we can't afford to be careless either and both games are important."
