Athletic Bilbao coach Valverde: Girona beat us at our own game

Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde admits they weren't good enough for defeat to Girona.

Valverde admitted "it was a day in which nothing went right" after the Lions' 2-3 home loss against Girona FC on Sunday afternoon.

"This is sport and some times it goes well and some times it doesn't," Valverde said post-match.

"We lacked consistency, but we have to keep working so that luck falls on our side next time. Once it went to 1-3 it was an uphill battle for us."

A win against Girona could have put Athletic into sixth place in the LaLiga standings and Valverde regretted his side couldn't take advantage of the situation.

"They beat us at our own game in many ways," he said. "We have to try to be on top from the first minute to the last. We had a chance to go sixth, we fought until the last minute and even with a player down we went close to equalising."
