The former Newcastle United midfielder has established himself as one of the best performers in the LaLiga.

His form has seen Merino linked with Barcelona this season.

And BirminghamLive reports Villa boss Unai Emery is keen to bring him back to England this month.

Since leaving Newcastle, the 26 year-old Merino now boasts 11 Spain caps.
