Arsenal failed to defend as a team at Man Utd, it was far too easy – Keown

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown believes the Gunners did not defend well as a team in the 3-2 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Keown believes certain Arsenal players failed to fulfil their defensive duties on all three on United's goals, leaving their teammates high and dry.

"You have to defend as a team but that's exactly where Arsenal failed on Sunday. Too often they were caught out in transitions, with the midfield out of position and the defence exposed," Keown wrote in his column for the Daily Mail.

"When Arsenal pressed high up the pitch the defensive line was too deep and there was not enough of a midfield shield. That left holes for United to fly into.

"For United's first they deserve credit for hitting an early cross that caught out Arsenal. But the centre backs were too far apart and Gabriel did not move until the ball was on its way.

"Had he anticipated the threat he could have made an easy clearance. Instead it was a gift for the impressive Marcus Rashford.

"For the second I feel sorry for Francis Coquelin. He gave the ball away but he knows his defensive responsibilities and tried to recover.

"Meanwhile, his midfield team-mates were not interested in defending. Then when the ball was hooked back in, nobody was marking Rashford.

"For the third, both Arsenal full backs were well advanced so when the ball was lost there was an obvious danger.

"Aaron Ramsey is great at sniffing out attacking opportunities but he did not sense the defensive threat and the United midfield could gallop forward with Ander Herrera in acres of space.

"It was far too easy."
