The crude gesture of Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez on the World Cup dais has been explained.

After Argentina's shootout victory over France, Martinez was named as the tournament's best goalkeeper.

He went on stage to receive the trophy - and then delivered a slightly different celebration. The Argentine chose to make a crude gesture, where he took the trophy down to his precious parts.

Former Arsenal keeper Martinez later explained the gesture.

He told Radio La Red: "I did it because the French booed me. I can't handle their arrogance."
