Alonso: Yes, my family have deep Atletico Madrid ties - but they'll support Chelsea this week!

Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso has revealed he used to support Atletico Madrid - but claims there will be no split loyalties in his family when they meet in the Champions League this week.

Alsonso's dad Marcos Alonso Pena, a former Spain international, once played for and managed Chelsea's Champions League opponents.

But his son insists the Alonso family will be united in wanting Thomas Tuchel's side to win their big last 16 clash on Tuesday.

The Chelsea defender said: “My dad was there in two moments of his playing career - before and after playing for Barcelona.

“Then he was coach of the second team there and after that became manager of the first team. Of course, it's a special game for me and my family.

“I used to go and watch them, of course. In my family we have always supported the team he was working for, the same as they all do now with me.

“I think they will support Chelsea and try to give me the strength to help the team beat Atletico.

“For this club to qualify for the next round is of massive importance. I'm sure it will be very difficult. But we will try our best to win."

Alonso insists Chelsea will not be taking Atletico lightly.

He said: “They are one of the best teams in Spain. With the run they've had, winning the league and playing in two Champions League finals.

“There's still plenty of work to do to and Atletico is a great team but we will see what happens. We will work hard to compete with a team like that."
