Ajax chief Wim Jonk has confirmed Newcastle United have made an approach for Vurnon Anita.

The young midfielder, who can also play at the back, is viewed at Newcastle as a potential replacement for Cheick Tiote.

Jonk revealed an offer of €5 million from Newcastle, before adding: "Therefore, we haven't bothered replying.

"So, we're not negotiating, unless they come back with a different price. Now it is quiet, but English clubs are always late with transfers."
