Accrington aren't Everton: Hughes explains why football's return won't work

Accrington Stanley defender Mark Hughes has explained why the resumption of League One and Two must be treated differently to the Premier League and Championship.

As the coronavirus lockdown phase eases, there is a push across the Premier and Football League to resume and settle the season.

But Hughes warns there's a chasm between how clubs in the top-flight can handle the safety measures needed to resume training safely and what can be expected from those lower on football's pyramid.

He told Tribalfootball.com: "The Premier League will have a special doctor every single day, they'll have people cleaning their boots, kits, they've got training pitches that are kilometres long where you can all have space. In terms of the best they are going to get the best. In terms of the lower league, I can't see that happening."

Hughes knows all about what is available to Premier League players, having come through the system at Everton. Now 33, Hughes spent 13 years with the Toffees, captaining the U23 team and tasting Premier League and League Cup football with the first team.

Now in his fourth year with Accrington, the defender says it's unrealistic for authorities to expect the likes of Accrington to match the protocols demanded of Premier League teams as football in England attempts to return.

Hughes explained, "The Premier League can stay in a hotel all to themselves, but it's impossible for lower leagues to finance that.

"The realistic and sensible thing now is work something out for this year about the league table, whether that be PPG or voided, and just think about starting next year at a reasonable month, whether that be September, October or something like that. I'm sure there are people who know more than me who will sort it out."
