AC Milan owner Cardinale: We want to match Berlusconi success; Serie A better for US buyers than Premier League

AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale says he wants to repeat the success of the Silvio Berelusconi era.

Cardinale, however, recognises things won't happen overnight.

He said, "So far so good but it's early. The team has been ours for about a year and I almost just observed, I wanted to make sure I didn't arrive the American way, with guns blazing.

"The team that preceded us did an excellent job in managing and bringing Milan to a good point. The Milanese and the Italians were fantastic, we made some changes but we are there to do good on and off the pitch."

Cardinale also said: "There is a lot of disparity between the Premier League and the rest of the continent. There are only two institutional owners and investors in Europe, RedBird and Qatar in Paris.

"In England institutional ownership is sovereign and far greater. So I believe there are possibility for American investors to enter Serie A, while in England they could be excluded from the market. In America there are owners who have entered and many are friends, they have understood that Italy deserves to return to the top of European football.

"Milan has the second highest number of Champions Leagues after Real Madrid, we have to go back there, to the times of Berlusconi as owner and we want to do it now. The world has changed, my task is to find a new way to proceed."
