Zhirkov: I'm joining Chelsea to win the Champions League

Yuri Zhirkov is excited about his move to Chelsea.

"At Chelsea they've always wanted to win this trophy and for a number of reasons it hasn't happened," former CSKA Moscow winger Zhirkov told the Daily Mail as he waited for a plane from Moscow's Domededovo airport to London Heathrow.

"I hope that with my arrival their bad luck will change and that Chelsea will finally win this trophy."

The player had warned he would not leave CSKA if it was just to sit on the bench at Chelsea, but he said: "I'm confident in my own ability and I'm sure I can win a place in the team under new boss Carlo Ancelotti. I haven't yet spoken to him but I expect to soon.

"I always dreamed of playing in a top club and when the opportunity came, it would have been inexcusable for me to let it pass.

"I have never hidden the fact that I was keen to play in elite European football and that I would probably be forced to leave CSKA. However, I owe this club a lot for giving me a successful career.

"I repeatedly discussed my situation with the club management and I was promised that if there was a serious offer, then they would not put obstacles in my way. In practice, it has happened in the way that they promised."
