Everton produced a superb performance to defeat West Ham 2-1 at Upton Park in last night's Carling Cup quarterfinal.

Nigeria international striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni pounced on a defensive howler two minutes from time at Upton Park as David Moyes' Toffees reached the last four of the Football League Cup, where they lost 4-1 on aggregate to Arsenal in 1987/88.

Everton had to come from behind after the Hammers made a bright start and earned a 12th-minute lead through Carlton Cole.

But Leon Osman equalised shortly before the interval and then Yakubu pounced to poke home the winner after a mix-up between Danny Gabiddon and Robert Green.
