Xabi agent insists on Liverpool stay

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is committed to The Reds and will stay at Anfield next season, according to his agent Inaki Ibanez.

The Spain international has been linked with a move away from Liverpool, having seen his grip on a regular start at Anfield slip away this term.

Speculation has linked him with a return to Spain, but Ibanez claims that rumours surrounding his client are wide of the mark.

When asked where Alonso will play next season, the representative told Diario Vasco: "At Liverpool. Every year at this period of the year the rumours start.

"We are used to those things and we cannot fight against them. What I am trying to say is that if there was an intention to move it would have to be good from our point of view and from the club's point of view.

"It is not the case, in any way."

Ibanez claims that the fact Alonso made the trip to Spain to be at the birth of his child while Liverpool faced Inter in the Champions League has nothing to do with a suspected home sickness.

"I think that there has been some misunderstanding […]," he added. "The press said there was a bad relationship between Rafa Benitez and Xabi Alonso, which is not the truth. "There is no problem with Xabi. It does not exist. What happened is that they (the domestic press) benefited from his decision to be with his family to say he was homesick.

"I keep on seeing Xabi's future at Liverpool. You can never say never in football, but he has been here for four seasons, won a Champions League and people love him a lot. "What is happening is that it is a favourable moment to speculate and one day it is say Madrid want him, then Barca."
