Wigan confident winning race for Newcastle fullback Simpson

Wigan Athletic are making a move for Newcastle United fullback Danny Simpson.

The former Manchester United full-back has been unable to secure a long-term deal at St James's Park and has lost his place to new £5million France international Mathieu Debuchy in recent weeks.

Simpson has six months left on his Newcastle deal and has been unable to negotiate a new deal with the Newcastle board.

Wigan are favourites to sign the 26-year-old, who would cost around £500,000. That would enable him to return to his native north west, although a move to London could also appeal.
