Wigan chief Reid lifts lid on bust-up between Man City boss Guardiola and Cook

Peter Reid has spoken of his intervention at Wigan Athletic on Monday night.

Former Manchester City boss Reid stepped between Pep Guardiola and his opposing Wigan number Paul Cook as tempers frayed following the half-time whistle.

TV cameras in the tunnel then showed Cook and Guardiola having an angry exchange at half time of Wigan's shock win, with Reid – now a coach at Wigan – stepping into the midst of it.

Reid made light of the row, telling talkSPORT: “I have been called many things in my life but never a peacemaker!

Pep Guardiola and Paul Cook are two good managers – Pep's record is fantastic – but what they are is competitive.

“A slight disagreement on the sending-off spilled into the tunnel – it happens.

“There are cameras in the tunnel now and it was a massive media game, and it gets highlighted.

“I cannot tell you how many times it used to go off in the tunnel when I played. It was virtually every week.

“It shouldn't happen but that competitive edge in football, which I still love, sometimes spills over."
