Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan is desperate to keep hold of manager Roberto Martinez.

The Mirror says with Liverpool and Aston Villa keen, Whelan is ready to do what it takes to keep his Spanish coach.

Multi-millionaire Whelan is putting his hand in his pocket to agree to Martinez's 'terms' and try to stop him heading for the Kop or Villa Park.

Martinez asked for around £6million to be spent on new training facilities, a transfer kitty of about £10m to take him to the top ten - and new contracts for his staff.
