Wigan chairman Whelan proud of his World Cup six

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan is delighted six of his squad will be playing at the World Cup.

As expected, Maynor Figueroa and Hendry Thomas were named in the Honduras squad alongside ex-Latics midfielder Wilson Palacios.

There were also call-ups for Richard Kingson (Ghana), Vladimir Stojkovic (Serbia) and Won-Hee Cho, who returned to his native South Korea on loan in January to safeguard his national spot and has been rewarded with selection.

Wigan's sixth representative will be Steve Gohouri, who has capped a memorable week personally by making Sven-Goran Eriksson's Ivory Coast squad just days after penning a two-year contract at the DW.

And Whelan says the whole club will receive a boost from the exposure generated by the magnificent six on show.

He told the Wigan Evening Post: "The profile of the club is already fantastically high, as we prepare for a sixth season in the Premier League.

"Win or lose, we are watched by a huge number of people worldwide who know who Wigan Athletic are.

"And when we get six players representing you at the World Cup, it's just a fantastic tribute to our club and our town."
