Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez has rapped Fabio Capello for ignoring Chris Kirkland's England credentials.

Capello has persistently ignored Kirkland, who has just one cap for his country.

Martinez feels that Kirkland's club performances are being strangely overlooked. The Spaniard said: "Maybe the fact he is not being considered for England comes from the England camp because I cannot understand it. If you look at the standard of his performances - week in, week out - it is up there with the best in England.

"What Chris needs to do is carry on performing the way he did today until the end of the season and I still believe that maybe one day he will get that call again.

"Maybe the England camp have a different view and different targets at the moment but, if he keeps performing the way he has been doing and remains injury-free, I feel behind the scenes - without any mention of it in the media - he has got as good a chance as anybody."
