Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez expects Steve Gohouri to have a big World Cup with Ivory Coast.

Gohouri was handed a new deal before departing for South Africa.

"Steve has had a good role so far under Sven-Goran Eriksson and, at his age, is now ready to take on extra responsibility," Martinez told the Wigan Observer.

"I have no doubt he will have a big role to play in the World Cup."
