Wigan Athletic boss Steve Bruce has defended his move for Ecuador striker Cristian Benitez.
Reports last month suggested the promising forward was a target for Bruce after impressing for Mexican side Santos Laguna.
Benitez has averaged better than a goal every two appearances for Ecuador and could join compatriot Luis Antonio Valencia at the JJB Stadium.
With Emile Heskey out of contract at the end of the season, and Amr Zaki only on loan, Bruce could be in need of attacking reinforcements.
An £8million offer for Benitez has been mooted and Bruce admits the 22-year-old is on Wigan's radar.
"Benitez is one we're looking at," said Bruce in the Daily Mirror. "It's the way forward for us to go and look for another Amr Zaki.
"I'd love to sign five or six Lee Cattermoles at 20 or 21, but it's not possible."
