Why it is time for Arsenal, Leicester, Roma target Milik to fly the Ajax coop

COMMENT: Arkadiusz 'Arek' Milik's career has been bubbling along nicely in Holland.

The Polish striker, 22, announced himself on the European stage last season with a prolific campaign for Dutch giants Ajax.

Milik initially arrived in Amsterdam on loan from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2014 following a season spent with FC Augsburg.

His development in Germany had been steady without really catching fire but fast forward to July 2016, and the product of Tychy could be ready to take the next step in his fledgling yet enormously encouraging career.

Dutch journalist Hans Roozekrans is well aware that Milik has the ability and scope to make the grade at a higher level, but he admits he would love to see the club's top scorer of 2015/16 stay on at the Amsterdam Arena.

“Rumours around Milik are that he's expected to leave Ajax this summer," Roozekrans told Tribalfootball.

“He's underestimated, I would love to see another year at Ajax for Milik.

“I think Milik has a bright future, is young and can consistently score goals."

While Milik has previously hinted that he is keen on a move to Bayern Munch where he could emulate Poland teammate Robert Lewandowski, it appears there are a plethora of other clubs who have been credited with an interest in recent times.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Lazio, Leicester City, AS Roma and Everton are just some of the names that have popped alongside Milik's.

“The interested clubs at the moment are Lazio and AS Roma, but I've also heard something about Leicester City," Roozekrans added.

“I would say around 20million euros (£16.7m) would be the likely fee."

The interest in the 31-time Poland international comes at a handy time for those clubs that are keen as Ajax recently signed a Colombian striker, Mateo Cassierra, and continue to be heavily linked with Schalke's Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

Roozekrans feels both of these factors could see Milik depart Amsterdam and try his luck in a higher standard of competition such as Serie A or the Premier League.

“With the signing of Cassierra and the interest in Huntelaar, Milik is probably on his way out," he said further.

“It's kind of a new tactic for Ajax as normally they're not kind on buying South American players for quite some cash.

“In dutch media there were talks that Huntelaar has a Ajax clause in his contract, saying he could leave for free if Ajax is interested. Only the story is not confirmed.

Ajax needs experience and Huntelaar is a former Ajax player and rumours are he may leave Schalke on a free transfer."

“However, (new manager) Peter Bosz only had his first day at Ajax recently, so we don't really know what the real plans will be."

Last campaign, left-footed centre-forward Milik found the back of the net 21 times in 31 Eredivisie outings, plus a further three in Europe, to add to the 20 he scored in all competitions the season before when on a temporary stay.

There are a history of quality goalscorers before him who have honed their craft at Ajax prior to moving on to bigger and better things.

Namely Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Luis Suarez.

There is no doubting the raw talent of Milik who started all five of Poland's games at Euro2016, scoring the winner against Northern Ireland in their opener, before calmly converting from the spot in their eventual elimination at the hands of Portugal by virtue of a penalty shootout.

He has actually been as bountiful, if not more, than both Ibrahimovic and Suarez were during their early days at Ajax.

Milik's 32 goals in 52 league games gives him a better strike rate than Zlatan had in Holland. The Swede scored 35 times in 74 outings.

Suarez ended up with 91 in 139 matches for the Dutch powerhouse, which is phenomenal, but he scored 30 in his first 53 performances in a red and white shirt which is comparable to Milik's numbers.

With his goal tally certain to continue rising for Ajax in the humble surroundings of the Dutch top flight, the time is right for this deadly marksman to make the splash by diving right in to one of Europe's premium competitions and emulating the brilliance of Zlatan and Suarez who have become household names around the world.

Just be sure to shorten that tongue-twisting given name to the more pronounceable Arek!
