Former Manchester United FA Cup winner Norman Whiteside backs Louis van Gaal over his playing system.
United fans chanted "four-four-two" at him during last week's victory over QPR after growing tired of his 3-5-2 formation.
Whiteside told the Daily Star Sunday: "LVG will know United's history is attack, attack, attack. I'm glad he's come here with his own system. There is nothing wrong with that. Nor is there anything wrong with changing it. He is open to change if things aren't going his way.
"He's a bit of a Fergie character in a way. He generates respect. His CV speaks for itself. He's a disciplinarian.
"And make no mistake, he is capable of delivering Premier League titles to this great club.
"In this day and age, fans and owners want results yesterday but I'm a believer that any manager should be given three years, a year to inherit a team, a year to build one, and a year to get results.
"That is what Van Gaal needs. Time. This idea of a manager getting six or nine months. I don't understand it.
"While the reality is that managers have to prove themselves instantly, as an ex-player, I think every manager should get three years and if they're not good enough after that - then off you go.
"In Van Gaal's case, I have no doubt he will qualify for Europe this year and win the title inside the three-year period I mentioned. The bottom line is he was the right man for the job at the right time."
