Whelan says six stars would have been sold if Wigan had gone down

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan admits he would have sold six players if relegated.

Whelan was all smiles at the end as Wigan made it back-to-back wins for the first time in 26 months.

Martinez said: "It would be foolish to say we can keep all of the players, it is the modern game. But there is a time and a price.

"I am so pleased for the chairman, he is a great human being. He is on cloud nine. The emotion he showed at the end was real. He is a winner, an inspiration. Sometimes it's extra pressure, you don't want to let him down."
