West Ham's Allardyce: I learnt a lot from Tottenham legend Mackay

Sam Allardyce has paid tribute to the late Dave Mackay following his death on Monday night.

The Tottenham great, who won the 1961 double with Spurs and also coached Derby County to the league title in 1975, passed away aged 80 in Nottingham and his death has saddened the wider football community.

One of the many that Mackay influenced during his time as both a player and a manager was West Ham United boss Allardyce who has revealed how much he learnt from the Edinburgh-born legend.

"I knew Dave," he said. "He lived in and around Nottingham when I was manager of Notts County for three years.

"I spent many a good night with him talking about his time in football, asking him about management, so it is a very sad day as he was a great guy and a terrific footballer."

Allardyce added: "In life you take a lot of things from a lot of people. I think if you want to learn stuff, you don't always learn it from reading a book or doing a Masters degree.

"You can learn an awful lot listening to the experiences of people who have been great in their particular career."
