West Ham invite bids for defender Upson

West Ham United have put defender Matthew Upson up for sale at £6 million.

The Daily Star says the centre-half is out of contract at the end of the season when he can leave Upton Park for nothing.

Upson feels he needs to be playing European football to maintain his international career and has so far failed to give Hammers boss Avram Grant any assurances over his future.

He has been linked with big-money moves over the past 12 months, with former club Arsenal, Sunderland and Tottenham all interested.

Now the Hammers have opened the door for the 31-year-old to leave before the transfer window slams shut in 11 days - so that he does not exit the club on a free transfer next summer.

Co-owner David Gold said: "We want to keep Matt here, but at the same time we know we may have to sell him if he tells us he doesn't want to stay.

"We don't want to let him leave the club for nothing. It's a difficult balancing act and a dilemma for us.

"If someone came in and bid £6m or £7m for him, we would have to sell."
