West Ham United co-chairman David Gold has defended Avram Grant's record so far this season.
Gold insists Grant inherited a poor squad from former manager Gianfranco Zola.
"Avram did inherit a Championship side because with the 35 points that we got last season, that would normally get you relegated," said Gold. "It has been difficult for him. He is building. He is re-gilding and slowly you can see, with six players brought into the team (against Manchester United), the strength of the squad. Things are starting to come together.
"It is only two victories, but it does give ourselves hope that we can get off the bottom of the table. That is our next target and once we have done that it is of course to get out of the bottom three."
