West Brom's Hodgson chasing defensive strength

West Bromwich Albion manager Roy Hodgson is targeting the defence as the place he most wants to concentrate on during the summer transfer window.

The Baggies have conceded 64 goals this season - the second most in the Premier League behind Blackpool's 70 - and have scored as many as fifth-placed Tottenham (49).

Hodgson says the defence needs to be strengthened so the forwards do not have to be relied upon so much to record points.

"Maybe one of the things we'll need to look at during the close-season is making certain we do shore up a little bit defensively because I don't think you can rely on your team to score two or three goals every game, especially away from home," he said.

"We scored three away from home to win at Sunderland, two away to get a draw at Tottenham on Saturday and two to get a point against Arsenal.

"We can't rely upon that all the time."
