West Bromwich Albion looked to have a clear run for out of favour Aston Villa striker John Carew until Stoke made a late bid, and according to Sky Sports, the Potters are now in talks with the Norwegian. The arrival of club-record signing Darren Bent for an £18million fee has pushed the Norway international further down the pecking order.
Albion boss Roberto Di Matteo had confirmed his interest in the former Valencia and Lyon forward.
Carew is reported to have held discussions with the Britannia Stadium side over a loan move which would run until the end the season.
The 31-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and appears very unlikely to be offered fresh terms by Houllier.
