Weir talks up Rangers Champions League future

Rangers skipper David Weir tried to be positive at the Govan club's Champions League future. "I haven't really thought about it," he said. "But the parameters for qualifying and the games you have to win in order to qualify from next season are common knowledge.

"Anybody who is realistic will know that it is very hard to get there although it is still possible.

"I don't know about pressure but you have got to go and play, regardless of the situation.

"We would obviously like this to be the game whereby we are qualifying for the last 16, that would be the ideal scenario but unfortunately that is not the case.

"However, we still have to go and get the three points to finish with eight points and we have that driving us on.

"And also just the pride in playing and trying to put in a good performance on this stage, is important."

Weir is expecting something of a backlash from the Turkish club who have struggled in their first appearance in European football's premier club competition.

The former Everton and Hearts defender said: "They won't want to go through the whole campaign without getting any points so I'm sure they will be determined to get something on the board and we have to be ready for that.

"They were Turkish champions last season and they are right up there in the league this season and that doesn't happen by accident.

"The Champions League is a different level and they don't have a great deal of experience playing in it.

"But I'm sure they will be determined to get back next year and show that they are capable of playing in it.

"It's all about us though, it's all about what we do and we have to have a pride in ourselves and in our performance.

"We want to finish the Champions League campaign on a high note, we don't want to go out on a low note.

"We have players who have experience of playing in this competition and that has been a benefit for us.

"I'm sure Bursaspor will be looking at it as a learning curve but they will be in the same mind-set as us, they will be trying to get the same as us from the last game."
