Vlaar: Fernandes let down Man Utd and his teammates

Former Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar slammed Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes after their defeat at West Ham.

Vlaar insists Fernandes was to blame for Jarrod Bowen's opening goal for the Hammers.

He said on ViaPlay: “What's going wrong at Manchester United? Yes, Fernandes... I find that poignant, I have to be honest.

“That is the captain of your team…

“He is responsible for Bowen at 1-0. He just lets him walk! He's not going to hand it over either, is he? It's not like he says to a teammate: 'Here he comes! He's coming!' No, he just lets him walk and just walks.

“That is your captain. That is really bad. Really distressing."

Presenter Koen Weijland asked Vlaar whether Fernandes would be corrected by his teammates.

"I have no idea. I assume they also immediately see those images on the couch. I think they have an iPad there now too. But yes, this is simply not possible.

“You just let your club and team down. And I really think that is an understatement. You have to take the lead. They are going through a difficult phase and are having a difficult season. As a captain you have to be at the front and things like this really can't happen to you."
