Villarreal striker Gerard Moreno: We produced our best ever first-half

Villarreal striker Gerard Moreno says they leave the Champions League with heads held high.

Villarreal lost 2-3 to Liverpool on the night to lose the semifinal 2-5 on aggregate.

Moreno said, "We really have to be proud of what we've done here because the team believed and kept on giving everything right until the final whistle. We played incredibly in the first half – maybe our best–ever first half.

"In the first half we didn't lose a challenge, the fans were brilliant in their support – we got the tie back where we wanted it to be.

"Everyone around this club needs to be proud of this shirt, and of this era. At half-time we had a clear idea of how to continue, to hit the same levels again. We were fully aware that continuing to press high had its risks, but we simply had to continue playing that way. We couldn't quite keep the intensity high enough, but we go out with our heads held high."
