Aston Villa coach Tony McAndrew admits they were lucky to get a 1-1 draw at Villa Park in the first-leg of their FA Youth Cup semifinal against Newcastle United.
Kofi Poyser struck an equaliser for Villa in the second-half.
"I thought in the first-half we got out of jail," McAndrew told Villa's website. "We didn't start at all well and we probably didn't compete for the first 45 minutes. So to get a 1-1 after 90 minutes, we are delighted.
"We were really disappointed with the first-half performance and we did a bit better in the second-half. But it was still a bit below what we expect.
"We are still in the tie, which said would be important so let's hope we can perform better next week.
"You've got to say it is the semi-final of the Youth Cup, they are 17 years of age, it is a really big night for them and there was a little bit of tension."
